Monika Schönauer is a Profes­sor and Chair of Neuropsy­chol­ogy at the Insti­tute of Psychol­ogy, Univer­sity of Freiburg, and leads the Emmy Noether Group “The Devel­op­ment of the Engram”.

Monika Schönauer is an expert in memory and sleep research. Her main research inter­est lies in under­stand­ing how we form stable memories. To address this, she inves­ti­gates functional activ­ity and microstruc­tural plastic­ity in the human brain using neuroimag­ing methods. She also employs machine learn­ing approaches to track the devel­op­ment of memory representations—not only during wakeful­ness, but also during sleep, where daily experi­ences are covertly processed.

Monika Schönauer has been awarded the Leopold­ina Early Career Award and the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize by the German Research Founda­tion (DFG). She is a member of the Memory Disor­ders Research Society, the Wilhelm Wundt Society, and was elected to the Inter­na­tional Neuropsy­cho­log­i­cal Symposium.
