For Ground­break­ing Contri­bu­tions to the Devel­op­ment of Innov­a­tive Thera­pies for Obesity and Diabetes

Hector Fellow Matthias H. Tschöp, Presi­dent of Ludwig Maxim­il­ian Univer­sity of Munich (LMU), has been awarded the 2026 Broer­mann Medical Innova­tion Award. Together with Prof. Svetlana Mojsov (The Rocke­feller Univer­sity, New York) and Prof. Richard DiMarchi (Indiana Univer­sity), he will receive the €1 million prize in recog­ni­tion of their ground­break­ing contri­bu­tions to the devel­op­ment of innov­a­tive thera­pies for obesity and diabetes.

Matthias Tschöp is inter­na­tion­ally recog­nized as one of the leading researchers in the field of metabolic science. Since October 2025, he has served as Presi­dent of LMU Munich. The award honors his pioneer­ing discov­er­ies in trans­la­tional metabolic research, which, together with the work of Mojsov and DiMarchi, laid the founda­tion for the first medica­tions capable of signif­i­cantly reduc­ing body weight, improv­ing blood glucose control, and sustain­ably lower­ing the risk of cardio­vas­cu­lar, neurode­gen­er­a­tive, and oncolog­i­cal diseases.

Estab­lished in 2024, the Broer­mann Medical Innova­tion Award is among the world's most highly endowed inter­na­tional prizes in medicine. It recog­nizes scien­tific break­throughs with excep­tional benefits for patients world­wide. The award ceremony will take place on 17 Novem­ber 2026 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
