Scientific Exchange and New Perspectives in Mannheim and Heidelberg
From September 29 to October 1, the Hector Fellow Academy’s Young Researcher Days brought together over 35 doctoral researchers from across Germany for three days of scientific exchange, networking, and career development in Mannheim and Heidelberg. The event provideds a platform for doctoral researchers to share experiences, build connections, and gain new perspectives on their scientific careers. This year, Sofia-Iris Bibli, Hector Research Career Development Awardee and Head of the Vascular Dysfunction Division at Heidelberg University’s Faculty of Medicine, organized the event in Mannheim and Heidelberg and put together an engaging and varied program.
The first day focused on the challenges of pursuing a successful scientific career. Talks and discussions with Prof. Dr. Hellmut Augustin, Department of Vascular Biology and Tumor Angiogenesis ot the Faculty of Medicine Mannheim and Junior Principal Investigators gave participants the opportunity to learn from their experiences and exchange ideas about career development in academia. In another talk, Prof. Dr. Dr. Katharina Domschke, University Medical Center Freiburg, explored how scientific discoveries can be translated into therapies and integrated into clinical practice. Another session explored the role and potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in research, highlighting new opportunities for scientific discovery. A guided tour of Mannheim University Hospital offered a behind-the-scenes look at the clinical environment. Subsequent visits to several laboratories provided fascinating insights into both clinical and basic biomedical research.
On the second day, participants visited the Cardio-Oncology Section at Heidelberg University Hospital. The visit offered insights into the interdisciplinary field of cardio-oncology, which examines the complex relationship between cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Prof. Dr. Lorenz Lehmann introduced participants to this research area and highlighted its importance for developing and implementing innovative treatment approaches.
Networking was also an integral part of the program, with plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow researchers, strengthen existing relationships, and exchange ideas in an informal setting. One of the highlights was a visit to the Mannheim Planetarium, where participants embarked on a journey through our galaxy with the show “Galaxy – A Journey Through the Milky Way”. Shared dinners provided further moments to get to know one another, reconnect with familiar faces, and continue conversations in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Hector Fellow Academy’s Young Researcher Days take place annually and are an important part of the Academy’s commitment to supporting early-career researchers. The event fosters scientific exchange and collaboration among doctoral researchers while also welcoming new members into the Academy. Each year, the Hector Fellow Academy awards several fully funded doctoral positions with Hector Fellows and Hector Research Career Development Awardees, supporting outstanding early-career researchers as they pursue their scientific careers.
