Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Katrin Amunts

Katrin Amunts is a full profes­sor for Brain Research, and direc­tor of the C. and O. Vogt Insti­tute of Brain Research, Heinrich Heine Univer­sity Duessel­dorf, and direc­tor of the Insti­tute of Neuro­science and Medicine (INM‑1), Research Center Juelich. From 2016 to 2023, she was the Scien­tific Direc­tor of the European flagship, the Human Brain Project, and now coordi­nates the digital platform EBRAINS.

Katrin Amunts is a German neuro­sci­en­tist, and well known for her work in human brain mapping. To better under­stand the organ­is­ing princi­ples of the human brain, she and her team have devel­oped the Julich-Brain Atlas, a new type of atlas that brings together data from all levels of the brain and gives them a spatial framework.

Katrin Amunts is speaker of the Helmholtz Joint Lab Super­com­put­ing and Model­ling for the Human Brain (SMBH) and coordi­nates the topic Decod­ing Brain Organi­za­tion and Dysfunc­tion of the Helmholtz Associ­a­tion. She is co-speaker of the gradu­ate school Max-Planck School of Cogni­tion. She is also a member of the Inter­na­tional Advisory Council Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives, the National Academy of Science and Engineer­ing, Acatech and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences. She holds an honorary doctor­ate from Maastricht Univer­sity and is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopold­ina).
