Prof. Günter M. Ziegler has been elected as President of Freie Universität Berlin for a second term
On February 16, 2022, the Extended Academic Senate (eAS) met with its 61 members to elect the president of Freie Universität Berlin. Günter M. Ziegler received 46 of 61 votes in the first round of voting. To be elected president, at least 31 votes were required. He thus won the election with an absolute majority.
Günter M. Ziegler has been in office since July 2018 and will begin his second four-year term prospectively on July 6, 2022. It is planned that the vice presidents will also take office on the same day.
Prof. Günter M. Ziegler has been a Hector Fellow since 2013 and has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). He is a member of the Board of the German Mathematical Society, Chairman of the Steering Committee of Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD), and a member of the Executive Board of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, among others.
