Günter M. Ziegler re-elected as president

Prof. Günter M. Ziegler has been elected as Presi­dent of Freie Univer­sität Berlin for a second term

On Febru­ary 16, 2022, the Extended Acade­mic Senate (eAS) met with its 61 members to elect the presi­dent of Freie Univer­sität Berlin. Günter M. Ziegler received 46 of 61 votes in the first round of voting. To be elected presi­dent, at least 31 votes were required. He thus won the election with an absolute majority.

Günter M. Ziegler has been in office since July 2018 and will begin his second four-year term prospec­tively on July 6, 2022. It is planned that the vice presi­dents will also take office on the same day.

Prof. Günter M. Ziegler has been a Hector Fellow since 2013 and has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Founda­tion (DFG) and an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). He is a member of the Board of the German Mathe­mat­i­cal Society, Chair­man of the Steer­ing Commit­tee of Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD), and a member of the Execu­tive Board of the Inter­na­tional Mathe­mat­i­cal Union (IMU). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (Leopold­ina), the German Academy of Science and Engineer­ing (acatech), and a Fellow of the Ameri­can Mathe­mat­i­cal Society, among others.
