New video portrait of Hector Fellow Jürg Leuthold

The new video portrait intro­duces Hector Fellow Jürg Leuthold and provides insights into his research at ETH Zurich and his involve­ment in the Hector Fellow Academy. Prof. Dr. Jürg Leuthold has been Profes­sor of Photon­ics and Commu­ni­ca­tion and Head of the Insti­tute for Electro­mag­netic Fields at ETH Zurich since 2013. In 2010, he was awarded the Hector Science Award.

Jürg Leuthold researches new concepts and methods of optical signal process­ing at highest data trans­mis­sion rates. His fields of inter­est are photon­ics, plasmon­ics and microwave photon­ics with research focus on appli­ca­tions in commu­ni­ca­tion and sensor technology.

Since 2013 he has been a member of the Hector Fellow Academy. In the Hector Fellow Academy, he is leading an inter­dis­ci­pli­nary project together with Hector Fellow Eberhard Zrenner from the Univer­sity of Tübin­gen entitled "RetinaSen­sor: Enhanced Vision Restora­tion in Blind People". The goal of the project is to develop a new gener­a­tion of retinal implants that will improve the vision of visually impaired people. "This is a unique collab­o­ra­tion that brings together physics, electri­cal engineer­ing and medicine" so explains Jürg Leuthold in the video portrait. "Without the Hector Fellow Academy, we would not have come up with the idea. (...) It was only through this that the bridge-build­ing came about."

In Jürg Leuthold's team, junior scien­tist Shadi Nashashibi contributes signif­i­cantly to the project “RetinaSen­sor”. His doctoral position is funded by the Hector Fellow Academy.

The Hector Fellow Academy regularly publishes video portraits of the scien­tists in its network. The videos provide insights into the diverse research projects of the Hector Fellows and the young scien­tists. Viewers thus have the oppor­tu­nity to get to know the Hector Fellow Academy better.
